OMgoodness!
My little Pumpkin who is only 6 months old turns into a completely different pug when we try to clip her claws!!!!
She is such a fun loving, slightly hyper (as puppies tend to be) happy girl who is well on her way to learning her manners, but HOLY COW! Try to clip her claws and she becomes a DEMON! Growling, screaming, bulging red eyes! She hasn't bitten, and at least when she calms down she returns to normal.
We got her when she was about 2 months. She still lets us touch her paws and enjoys a little paw massage, so it's not like she has paw phobia. But where in the world is this coming from and how can we re-teach her that a little claw clipping is OK and not so bad??? Usually Dave clips her claws and I tried doing it by myself tonight...never again. I am still emotional from the ordeal and most likely will just take her to the vet to get clipped.
Any ideas what may be causing this behavior and any suggestions on how to deal with it and maybe change it????
We love her to death, but I think we may have a dog that has some issues.
Thanks!

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Wed, March 7, 2007 - 9:20 AMI think it might be a "pug" thing for some Pugs. Both of my pugs are the same way....exactly....One is over 11 years old and we lost the other at the end of 2005 at 9 years old to a brain tumor. :( They never out grew their reactions to nail clipping and they were therefore trimmed at the vet and otherwise sported longish nails in the meantime.....(My hardwood floors are fairly scratched as a result but the dogs are worth it to me!) LOL.
Try not to stress about it...I think it is worse to fight them and we must take care when they are squirming because they have sensative eyes due to the fact that they are bulging....not worth forcing them....at the vet they do it quickly and aren't as emotional about it as we are so to me it is worth the money!
Good luck! -

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 10:31 AMi know it sounds CRAZY, ( and too late for you know, unfortunately) but i started painting my pugs toenails when she was just teeny teeny. Now, clipping her nails is a snap because she's used to having her feet touched.
But, on to you. When I was a vet tech, this is what we would do for dogs and cats that severely protested to the trimming. GET TWO PEOPLE to try this.
*Get a towel or blankie and SWADDLE your pug, slightly covering their head (so they can't see who's doing the clipping or holding) exposing the target leg.
*HOLD ON TIGHT. It might take a few tries to get puggie wrapped up snug enough as to not be able to squirm out. You are NOT holding too tight, but try not to compress the chest as to cause panic by difficulties breathing.
*Clip quickly, but obviously not too short. Have the Quick Stop handy in case you cut too deep. It does hurt when this happens, not to mention bleeds like a slit pig.
It might be too late to get your pug to sit still on its own, but this way you might be able to avoid a costly (and traumatic, due to the association of nail clippings) trip to the vet just for this.
Good luck!

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Fri, April 13, 2007 - 1:13 PMmy sympathies, pugs are notorious, some say the worst breed for nails. I'm lucky because living in the city Dave mostly walks on concrete, so they are worn down and don't need to be trimmed with clippers. -

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Sun, April 15, 2007 - 9:52 PMI've actually of late had a little success. :) I started using toenail clippers instead. Easier to cut and faster. Seems like it causes less discomfort too. She still is resistant but I kept treats in my hand and clipped one nail at a time and rewarded her with treats. She still didn't like it but it didn't become and all out war. In between cuts I gave her a little break. I'm hoing with time we can turn it into a good experience that she will at least tolerate if she knows food is involved. She is such a little chow hound! -

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Mon, April 23, 2007 - 11:53 AMMe too, as a city dweller, I never had to cut my pug's nails! The pavement ground down his nails and took care it for me. We took long walks on the sidewalk every night! A mile or more in the spring, summer and fall, in the winter his nails were not long enough to worry about!

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Sat, June 9, 2007 - 1:02 PMMan..can I relate! I have 2 pugs, and 1 puggle...all get hysterical when it comes to clipping. Even tho. they are outside running alot, they still get very long, very quickly! This is a stressful time for "Mom", as well as the "kids"... I end up dripping in sweat by the time all is said and done. I have alot of probs. with the "quick" being so close to the end of the nails, and a couple nails almost always end up bleeding. No wonder they are traumatized, right? Its so hard when the nails are black, cant see anything. I can't cut hardly anything off bec. of the bleeding issue, but what else can I do? I wish I had advice, but the only thing I do is try to hold on for dear life, and give each one a treat and lots of praise when they are done. Yet its still a fight every time! Good luck to all of us pug lovers!!

Re: Mad dog, mad dog!!! Help!
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 12:02 PMwe have puggle, and the first year we were ready to kill him, but now he has mellowed out. He can be a real handful. Everyone tells us it is the beagle part in him, and all the cuteness and good stuff is the pug part in him.
though we haven't tried to clip his nails, but my wife gets him to brush his teeth, washes his face, and wear his pajamas to bed. II know at first he was so hyper wouldn't sit still to let you do anything.
