I've feed Chewie Purina One since he was a puppy.....Everyone under the sun has told me that it's bad to feed supermarket food to my dog. Well, he's alomost ten and he made it this far with no problems! So please no lectures.
Hower, since moving to California, his allergies have really acted up. And food switches have been suggested by vets several times. I switched him to a few different prescribed and natural foods over the last three years- and the allergies only got worse. Then I have to slowly switch him back to Purina.
I even tried the RAW (BARF) diet, and the explosive diarrhea doesn't work with the white rugs in my very pricey rented apartment. If I had a house with a yard, I might have stuck it out. Again, no lectures.
He likes Purina...he doesn't like much. Recently I have switched him to CloudStar Kibble. He seems to really love it, and his allergies actually seem to have lessened. But he has the worst gas EVER! His stool is alos very loose. It's been pretty non-stop since I started the switch three weeks ago. He just only a few days ago made it to all CloudStar.
I guess I'm asking:
What food do you feed your pug? (I only want a list of real experiences...I can find lists of suggested food, but those are just lists)
Has anyone tried Cloudstar for their pug?
Any ideas on helping the gas? WIl this go away or should I start the switch back to purina?
thanks - Kristie

Re: food & Pug Gas
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 4:24 PMChanging their diet will cause intestinal issues. That will usually subside after a few weeks.
All dog foods sold have basic nutrition to keep a dog healthy. Purina One is fine. We've had plenty of dogs that have lived long healthy lives on regular Purina.
However, our social-economic status has increased with age and now we feed our baby's Nutro Ultra. Maybe because it makes us feel better to buy the most expensive food. Maybe it's because they poop less (which they do). But, we do, that's the bottom line.

Re: food & Pug Gas
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 6:47 PMChewie hates Nutro, and his allergies are terrible on it--scratching and ear infections. I went so far as to try the Honest Kitchen diet (dehydrated dog food, you prepare) and his allergies were awful on that too...Sometimes I think the whole food link is just a farce.
and then....The Cloud Star has cleared the allergies up pretty well, but he's never had gas like this. I've been through the usual food switch issues, I'm wondering if this food just doesn't jive. I'm hoping it goes away soon or he switches back to Purina I guess. It has been just over three weeks, and he's pooping way more and the smell, whoa!!!!

Re: food & Pug Gas
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 8:16 PMBuford, 3 mths, eats Iams Smart puppy <--- yeah right!! hehe It's what the breeder fed and I didn't want a vet bill by switching foods and having problems. Plus he's small and it doesn't cost alot. I have been looking at Hills Science Diet though. The vet said Purina or the other two I have mentioned would be his recommendation. Buford has had some gas and it has been smelly for such a little guy but he got into the cat food. Which happens to be Purina.
Read on......
My other dog NOT a Pug, a 4.5 yr old Choc Lab (he's the larger variety VS the Am. Field Lab which is smaller and furry-er) was at last check 120lbs, but has lost some because the same vet said to switch to Purina Fit N Trim (or the Sc. Diet ) We went with Purina, it has worked but his "dogpile" used to be medium, now it's a hu-normous mountain. He was on a high protein diet before the switch to Purina, a higher fiber diet that's filled with lots of corn ingredients!!! Corn equals poop, big poop, more frequent poop, and a weird smelling poop. Think about humans we have a hard time digesting corn, so wouldn't a dog too. I hope this helps even though it's not a pug the are both dogs.
Also I read on someones pug page and the vet verified it (I've been there twice this month for the last of his puppy shots, yeh!).... that you could give them chopped up carrots, unpeeled and deseeded apples, and yogurt as treats. The yogurt (mix it with the food) helps with loose stools and diarrehea. The apples and carrots are good for lowfat treats and anal gland health which is important for smaller breed dogs. About the allergy thing could it be the change in atmosphere, I'm sure the allergens were different wherever you came from. I was from FL and never had an allergy problem I move to dumpy old OH and I get both allergy seasons, it sucks!!! -

Re: food & Pug Gas
Tue, August 8, 2006 - 10:46 AMAs an update, it is 60 days on the new food and the gas is TERRIBLE and the poop is still soft (and there is sooooo much of it!) Back to purina.
If anyone else has any good or bad experience with cloudstar, let me know. It is all natural, human grade, no corn, yadda yadda yadda....
