My pug, Tess, is almost 3 and even though she has a sister, Bianca the dalmation, I know she longs for the company of her fellow pugs.

The other night she was humping my leg - if that tells you how lonely she is.

She is pedigreed, although fixed, since the vet said she might not do well having pups.
That's ok though because she is my "Little One" and the best companion on four legs that I've ever had.

We live in Hollister, CA, just south of San Jose. If anyone is interested in play dates, Tess's tail will be wagging.

A woman stole/found Scooter the pug and gave him to her daughter for Christmas. Then she wrote a letter to the owners with $20. Help scooter make it home. If you know anything, please email bringscooterhome@gmail.com

Hopefully, the girl or her friends are connected to the web and will connect this story to the pug and return him. The owners have even offered to buy her a new dog to keep! Please help! this is one of the saddest things I've ever heard....

For more information, read the stories below!!! The first is by the dog's daddy!

DALLAS — On Christmas Eve our little pug Scooter disappeared from our back yard (North Dallas - Midway and Royal). He was a year and a half old and we had raised him since he was a little puppy. We were devastated and felt that we had lost our little baby.

With the help of our neighbors we searched everywhere in the neighborhood, but he was nowhere to be found. We spent Christmas Eve crying and woke up early Christmas morning searching again, hoping beyond hope that we would find him. We posted signs around the neighborhood, but nobody knew anything about what happened to Scooter.

On New Years' Day, we received a strange letter from Tulsa. It was from the person who had taken Scooter. It was a sad story about a mother who seemed very down, having lost her home, job, and custody of her daughter due to her own personal decisions. She had taken our beautiful dog to give to her daughter on Christmas.

While she knew she had done the wrong thing by giving her daughter our dog, she did not want to tell her daughter and her ex-husband the truth about the dog that they now thought was theirs. The letter was not clear where the daughter lives, but they spent Christmas in Dallas with family.

We cannot understand how this mother could destroy another family just to make up for her past and pray that someone out there knows about a girl that got a pug for Christmas and helps us get our little baby back. We don't want anything bad to come to this family and are more than happy to buy the little girl a new dog and anything else that would reward her for taking such good care of our dog the past week. We just want Scooter to come home.

If you know anything about this situation, please email me at bringscooterhome@gmail.com. Thanks. - Robert Velevis

DALLAS -- The holidays were sad enough for Kim Velevis and her husband after their lovable pug "Scooter" dug its way out of the backyard and disappeared on Christmas Eve. But the real blow came with the new year: A letter from an anonymous woman who had found the friendly dog and gave it to her daughter as a Christmas present. To compensate for Velevis' loss, a $20 bill was enclosed.

"The puppy has a different name now, but he has plenty of food and toys. My daughter adores him. He sleeps with her every night," said the letter, which arrived Wednesday.

Velevis, 28, said she feels for the guilt-ridden woman, who described herself as a nearly penniless alcoholic. But she wants the dog back.

"We knew the first thing our Scooter would have done is find people," Velevis said. "He must have wandered up to this sick lady who, in desperation and in an attempt to fix her own life, ruined ours."

Velevis, who is 5 1/2 months pregnant with her first child, said she and her husband brought the wrinkly faced pooch home in July 2006 when he was about 8 weeks old.

Scooter could still be nearby. The typewritten letter, which carried a Tulsa, Okla., postmark, said the woman found the dog while visiting her daughter in Dallas. She wrote that her ex-husband has custody of the girl.

The woman, who discovered an address on the pug's collar, described a series of difficulties in her life.

"I lost custody because of problems I had with alcohol, and I have lost everything else," she wrote. "I have been sober for 6 months, and I am trying to turn myself around, but I have lost everything. My little girl wanted a pug dog like your little dog (very much!)"

The woman wrote that she cannot ask for forgiveness, "but I do want you to know that he does have people who love him and are taking care of him."

Velevis said she has no interest in pursuing charges against the woman and would be glad to purchase the woman's daughter another dog. - Matt Curry AP

She is such a fun loving, slightly hyper (as puppies tend to be) happy girl who is well on her way to learning her manners, but HOLY COW! Try to clip her claws and she becomes a DEMON! Growling, screaming, bulging red eyes! She hasn't bitten, and at least when she calms down she returns to normal.

We got her when she was about 2 months. She still lets us touch her paws and enjoys a little paw massage, so it's not like she has paw phobia. But where in the world is this coming from and how can we re-teach her that a little claw clipping is OK and not so bad??? Usually Dave clips her claws and I tried doing it by myself tonight...never again. I am still emotional from the ordeal and most likely will just take her to the vet to get clipped.

Any ideas what may be causing this behavior and any suggestions on how to deal with it and maybe change it????

As of late, many people who feed their dogs Nutro kibble have experienced similar problems. I switched Chewie to Nutro late last year. He has never had any infections or crystals, or really ever been sick, until now.

Taking a quick look around the internet, I have found many blogs and forum posts from dogs and cats fed Nutro who developed the crystals and infections. I also called a few vets in my area (and my own) and spoke to them about Nutro, and they have seen an increase in struvite crystals with the only common factor being Nutro.

A couple of pug breeders also confirmed that Nutro and Natural Balance cause urine to be too alkaline (high ph), which causes the struvite crystals. With Nutro it seems to be a problem that has become more widespread in the last 6 months or so.

They come from two very strongly negative lines for those two diseases.
We have two fawn boys and five black boys. We are asking $1500 for each one. The last two litters we sold for $2000 each, but with such a large litter we are more motivated to have the new owners a little more prepared for the cost of owning a pug.

Hi everyone! I just posted a pic of my pug Gypsy in the album. I took it yesterday when I was visiting her at the breeder. Shes 10 weeks old and she comes home with me next monday (the 2nd) and I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. I've never had a puppy period so I'm gearing up for the housetraining and chewing marathon.
A cool story about her. I started 'pug shopping' last fall and found my current breeder around late november. They were going to wait to breed her mom but her dad had other ideas and sprung her from the crate while the breeder was in the shower. They said they'd keep her separated in case it didn't take but I hoped it would because her dad was black and I was hoping for a black one(her mom is fawn and so's the other male they were *going* to breed her with so I thought chances would be better with a black parent) Plus they'd be due to go home in spring, just what I was hoping for. The breeder later told me that she was taking her for a check up to see if she was even pregnant so I was fretting over it and had a dream. In my dream she had 4 puppies, 2 black, 2 fawn, 2 females, 1 male, and the 4th kept changing (yeah wierd dream) Then I see her post on her site that the vet saw 4 puppies in the Xray so I emailed her and told her about my dream. We both agreed it would make seeing what the outcome was more interesting. Well. She had 2 fawn females, a black male, and a black female! I said I should have a hotline! I was hoping for the black girl but someone had requested that ahead of me so sulking I figured I'd have to wait till the next litter came. Then that lady chose a different puppy! So in a way I feel like she's *ment to be mine*. Dorky I guess but makes an interesting story I think.
And her disposition appears to be perfect! She's spunky enough to handle living here with my boys, and still loves to just sit and be petted.
So, I'm excited, wanted to share, and hope I can post questions if they come up!

Hower, since moving to California, his allergies have really acted up. And food switches have been suggested by vets several times. I switched him to a few different prescribed and natural foods over the last three years- and the allergies only got worse. Then I have to slowly switch him back to Purina.

I even tried the RAW (BARF) diet, and the explosive diarrhea doesn't work with the white rugs in my very pricey rented apartment. If I had a house with a yard, I might have stuck it out. Again, no lectures.

He likes Purina...he doesn't like much. Recently I have switched him to CloudStar Kibble. He seems to really love it, and his allergies actually seem to have lessened. But he has the worst gas EVER! His stool is alos very loose. It's been pretty non-stop since I started the switch three weeks ago. He just only a few days ago made it to all CloudStar.

I guess I'm asking:
What food do you feed your pug? (I only want a list of real experiences...I can find lists of suggested food, but those are just lists)
Has anyone tried Cloudstar for their pug?
Any ideas on helping the gas? WIl this go away or should I start the switch back to purina?
Of course I will keep you posted as to the number born. I will, as usual, probably post more photos than any normal person wants to see of the babies. Wish us luck!

As a result of an absent minded parent, who shall remain nameless, she got knocked up by her husband a good 6 months earlier than we had hoped. After going to the vet, I was assured that she would be just fine. I won't have any idea of how many to expect until September 2 when she goes in for a check up. She is balck and bred witha fawn, but there is no telling which color the pups will be. Both bitch and sire are guaranteed free of subluxated patella and hemi-vertabrae, as were their parents. Her due date is 9-11. If anyone is interested in adopting one of these very special babies, please chat me up.

Warning: I will be very particular about who takes on one of these babies. There will be many qualifications which need to be met in order to assure a successful adoption into their forever homes. I am not unreasonable, but I am going to do whatever I can to insure that the pups are placed in appropriate homes.

I am investigating adopting a Pug - I adore Pugs and had the pleasure of "being owned" by them as a teenager. The thing is that now I work and am away from home 8 hours a day. I want to give a Pug a great life and am researching how I could do that and still pay the bills.

I am looking into doggie daycare where the Pug would have friends and people to play with all day - If this is not possible how do Pugs do if it was home without me during the day but had a dog walker come twice a day to spend an hour each time with the dog?

We don't have a backyard but do live near a huge park that is dog friendly - they even have a Pug Club that meets there -

Any advice would be VERY appreciated~

Now, after living with miniature schnauzers for all my life (my father bred them & showed them - he's quite well known to miniature schnauzer/utility/obediance people) when I lived at home with my family, I think I need a change from that breed. So, I look at loads of dogs, mostly online and from dog shows on tv and I think I've just about fallen in love with the PUG!

So, before I'm ready to actually get a puppy/rescued dog, I'm going to be hanging around to learn more about the breed and hopefully find local pub owners to whre I can get more contact with the actual dogs to see if they're right for me.

After receiving a note from a fellow tribester I felt compelled to post some important info here for those who may not know to ask their vet some VERY IMPORTANT questions before any kind of surgery on a pug.
Make sure that you discuss anesthesia with your vet. Don't assume that the vet is well educated and/or versed in the proper induction of anesthesia for brachycephalic dogs (smashed-in face). Ask for induced and maintained anesthesia on isoflurane gas as one would expect a more normal heartrate than would using a barbiturate anesthetic. There are medications that increase heartrate, counteracting the anesthetic effect. This is why atropine and glycopyrrolate are often used in conjunction with anesthesia. Ask about countermeasures the vet would typiucally use during anesthesia to increase heartrate. Also ask the vet to explain why/when he/she would use these measures so you understand the vets philosophy in that regard to see if you are on the same page when it comes to managing risks.
I know it all sounds very confusing and alarming, but really I am just suggesting that you ask some important questions in order to better understand the risks of anesthesia and bring it to the attention of your vet that pugs have special needs. You will know if you are at the right vet if he/she takes the time to listen and explain his/her approach to anesthesia for pugs. If you want to know more specifics about anesthesia and pugs I suggest that you check out an article here http://www.vetinfo.com/danesth.html

It is a bit technical, but very enlightening and I'm sure it can explain a lot more clearly what I have highlighted regarding pugs and special anesthetic needs.

I believe his marking is due to excitement, since he always does it after I arrive home and when people walk by the window. Nonetheless, he can drench a room in little over 30 seconds and we've reached our breaking point. We now confine him to a smaller area, but the moment we let him out, he's marked three times. The barking goes hand in hand. He can bark non-stop and marks in the process. Indoors and out. Help!

I have a friend who adopted a pug from a shelter. She has never had a dog and the pug is her first. I have had three. She constantly asks me questions about the pug which I have no problem with. Her pug Lulu has heavy breathing and snorting which I would have to say is a normal pug trait. Although she says Lulu winds easily and the snorting is getting louder. Now mine do that in the summer time due to the heat. I have a black one and he tends to get real bad in the heat but is fine again in the air conditioning. No my friend took Lulu to the vet today and the vet said that her pug is in destress. She has a elongated soft palate and needs to have surgery. Now Im curious.... Have may others had to have this done... is it common or is it this guys way of making money off a snorty breathing dog. I am asking because I dont want poor Lulu or her owner to go through any unness. stress. Please let me know your thoughts....

Elongated Soft Palate:
One of the the most common forms of airway obstruction in Brachycephalic (short muzzled) breeds is due to an elongated soft palate. The soft palate is an extension of the hard palate which forms the roof of the mouth. The purpose of the soft palate is to serve as a mobile flap preventing food and water from entering the nasal passages during swallowing. A soft palate that is elongated will either hang in front of the airway or will fall into the larynx during inhalation. Dogs affected by chronic airway obstruction (CAO) tend to breathe
rather noisily when excited. Mouth breathing, snoring and snorting are characteristics of this condition. These characteristics become even more pronounced when the dog is hot or during periods of exercise. The dogs frequently gag in an attempt to clear their airway and occasionally bring up
foam and saliva while eating or drinking. The harder the dog breathes, the greater the swelling and elongation of the soft palate. Most often an elongated soft palate is difficult to positively confirm other than while the dog is under general anesthesia, surgical correction is usually done at the same time.

Hi all,
I'm new here. I got a pug about two months ago and love him! (I'll post a couple of pics soon)

I have a few questions though. I've been training him the usual things like come, sit, down, throwing and retrieving the ball (he actually brings it back and drops it when I tell him to)... but recently walking him has become increasingly hard. The last week or so he has just one speed - full throttle! He pulls on the leash like there was no tomorrow. Any suggestions? When I stop he stops. But as soon as I take a step forward he goes for it again. Is this just what a pug does? or is there something I can do?

The other recent thing he does (bless his little sole) is as we are walking suddenly realizes he has a tail and starts chasing it incessantly while he's on the leash. I've been giving him a tug of the leash and tell him no...he'll stop for a second and goes back for it.

And finally, does anyone have any recommendations for obedience classes in SF? He gets his final shots in two weeks and he'll be free to go.

Thanks!
Dear Pugfolk --
All of our worst nightmares have come to pass for Beth Knowlton:
last night while she was out, Elliot was in his crate and he and the
crate were stolen from her apartment at W. 112th St. and Lake Ave.,
just over the Lakewood/Cleveland Border. Elliot, as many of you may
know, is a "special needs" pug who has lost the use of right front
leg and gets around admirably well on three. Beth had just moved
into this apartment, a building with a courtyard, and the apartment
across from her was burglarized as well. Nothing else was taken
from Beth's apartment. The police were called and are involved.
I'm going to see if I can send another email with a flyer attachment
that you can print out and post in your neighborhood. Or if you want
to make up your own flyer, go ahead and do so. Those with
information should call 216-702-2665. Beth is offering a $1,000
reward and if we can blanket the area with the news, hopefully
someone will get Elliot back to Beth.
Also, if you are in other pug groups -- OPR; Pug meet-up, or any
other dog-related group -- would you get this message out to those
so that we can notify as many people as possible?
Elliot is a fawn male, five years old in July, who walks with his
right foot up. At the time he was taken Elliot was wearing, ID tags,
his collar and a navy blue "hero" t-shirt.
Dawn Broadway has put info on our website:
www.geocities.com/northcoastpugs and has emailed channel 3 in hopes
they might do a story since Elliot was featured in Pugapalooza and
the Pug Wedding. (Connie: if you can possibly get any Plain Dealer
coverage -- we realize the newspaper doesn't typically feature
stolen dogs as news stories -- we would be eternally grateful).
Any other ideas for getting Elliot returned will be appreciated.
Beth's number is 216-702-2665; you can call me at 216-381-9730.
Catholics: Saint Hubert is the patron Saint of dogs; do what you can
to get him on the case. All other religious intervention of any
creed also is valued and appreciated.
Hopefully,
When our momma was looking for us she had such a hard time finding any breeders that were reputable. They weren't breeding anymore.

The only reputable breeder she found wouldn't sell to her cause she had a job. Our pappa comes home at lunchtime and feeds us and lets us outside to poop and play. She had 2 Pugs before us Quito and Minnie, and wasn't a newbie owner. She loves us, takes good care of us, and spends a lot of time playing with us, she is a good momma. She is a responsible momma too cause we've been "fixed", (we didn't think we needed fixing but she said we did so here we are).

She ended up finding us but our breeder was only in it for the money. Our breeder wouldn't return our calls after we moved to our new home and all we wanted to know was what kind of kibble we were eating there. Our momma didn't want us to have upset tummies by feeding us food we weren't used to.

Our momma didn't like having to be forced to do business with these characters but what else could she do (ofcourse we're happy she did)? She knew it wasn't right to patronize these folks but she had to, no other breed would do.

Now, I have always thought that this was amusing coming from a pug, but really in a bigger dog I never would have tolerated it. And I have two bigger dogs that must follow the rules, so it seems unfair that Lilly is always breaking them.

I have started a training program with all my dogs recently to curb dominant behaviors and it seems like Lilly is trying harder to please me. Seeking more attention, more lap time, sleeping on my side of the bed, etc. She seems more secure in general, and much less demanding.

I guess I am starting to mature as a dog owner and realizing that discipline is actually good for the pack when done correctly...but also I think that pugs are so sensitive they must be handled differently. So, my question is this...where do you draw the line with a pug?

Hi,
Our Indy woke up this morning around 3 AM with what appeared to be small seizures or spasms. The best way I could describe it is that his movement was similar to a hiccup. In which case, he would respond with a fast-motion change in direction. Meaning, if he was walking right, he would "hiccup" and turn left.
The movements woke him up, which made him get up, walk on our faces, and then wake us up. His little face showed a great deal of conern (ears back) and we were scared to death. We held and comforted him and it stopped. After he fell asleep in our arms, it started slowly again, but didn't last long. All told, the spell ran about an hour.
I monitored his eyes, because epilepsy is characterized by rapid eye blinking, eye movements, or similar. However, his eyes were perfectly normal. I wouldn't think it was seizure because the spell was too long and his eyes remained normal.
I called the vet and they think it may be that he was needing to vomit. I was worried that he may have eated a snail killed by the snail bait. Although unlikely, since the snail bait is only in a few pots, the recent rains may have washed a snail down and he ate it.
Anyway, this morning, he is fine.
Of course, he was tired and went to sleep. We, one the other hand, got 3 hours sleep. :(
Does anyone have any ideas? The vet says to watch him and bring him in immediately if he has another spell. Otherwise, we have a non-related appointment a week from Saturday.
Thoughts anyone?
Thanks,
Scott

From all the research I have done I suspect our Pug Daboo has a collapsing Trachea or related condition but I wish to find a qualified Vet to diagnose the problem. If anyone has any experience with these conditions please feel free to post or write me directly at SOLNTGRN@aol.com.
If you haven't ever heard of Bean-O, it's a product for vegetarians that reduces flatulence.
